Top Tips for Planning a Vintage Wedding

The definition of vintage is something from the past that is of high quality. For a lot of people, the past is where things were better and more stylish, and if you look back at past fashions with a great sense of nostalgia, a vintage theme wedding is probably the one for you. So if you fancy walking up the aisle as a 1920s flapper girl, or you fancy a bit of Greta Garbo 1930s glamour, here are a few tips to help you make sure your big day is a resounding success.

Pick Your Era

Since vintage is anything from the past, there are lots of different periods in history to choose from. Any period from the 1920s through to the 1970s is always popular, but there is no reason why you can’t go back in time a lot further if this appeals. You don’t even have to stick to one particular era. Feel free to mix and match, but for best results stick to consecutive eras or things will begin to look a bit chaotic.

Find a Vintage Dress

If you are lucky enough to have a vintage wedding dress lying in a trunk in your attic then you are on to a good start, but if you don’t, then it may take a while to find the perfect vintage style dress. Authentic wedding dresses from bygone eras are not easy to find. Occasionally families keep wedding dresses and pass them down through the generations, but more often than not they are discarded as ‘old-fashioned’. It may be possible to find a dress from a more recent era in a charity shop or vintage clothing store. However, if you can’t find anything that first your vision, consider having a wedding dress made to measure.

Matching Wedding Outfits

Unless you have a big budget and a lot of time to spare, finding authentic vintage bridesmaid dresses and apparel for the groom and best man will also be hard. But as long as the style of the garments you choose is reasonably close to the style of the era in question, it shouldn’t matter too much. And besides, you will have to wear modern shoes in any case, so try not to get too hung up on the details.

Vintage Accessories

There are lots of ways you can use vintage accessories to create a beautiful wedding.

  • Send out vintage inspired invitations to your guests

  • Hire a vintage car to transport the bride and other members of the wedding party

  • Let vintage inspire your décor for the reception

  • Use vintage china and table linen

  • Look for vintage hair accessories and jewellery for the bride

Vintage weddings are usually very romantic in theme. Vintage china, glass cake stands, silver candelabras, stiff white linen tablecloths and gorgeous fresh flowers, with a swing jazz band playing in the background, has to be the most romantic wedding imaginable. So if this appeals to your sense of romance, start organising your vintage wedding!
